Wasting Your Marketing - Three Easy Ways

By Cynthia Pinsonnault Most of us make mistakes in our marketing now and then. I’ve done things with my own marketing and advertising that I would never advise a client to do. Sometimes I knew they were bad ideas before starting but, through some temporary lapse in judgment, went ahead anyway. Other times I learned the hard way what works and what doesn’t. At any rate, we don’t always think ahead to the results of each action we take. This brings me to #1 on my list of ways to waste your marketing. 1. No plan. I sound like a broken record on this topic and, in the interest of full disclosure, I confess I haven’t always had a plan. But, if there is a good way to assure some of our marketing and advertising efforts will be wasted (along with our budget), this is it. Without any plan, we’re easily dispersed and tend to market and advertise haphazardly. We become easy targets for anyone selling space in a directory, or worse, get the idea that hiring a plane to drag an incomprehensible message over the city will make the difference. Everyone needs a marketing plan: small companies, big companies, and every type of business in between. It doesn’t have to be a large, complicated plan. It doesn’t have to be very formal. However, there are some key things it should include: A. Short-term Goals — What do you want to accomplish right now? Increased sales, better customer relations? B. Long-term Goals — What do you want to accomplish over the next year, two years, five years? Staff increases, new areas of operation, improved company image? If you don’t know what you are reaching for, you will never get it. C. Estimated Budget — A budget helps you decide what you can do that will bring the best return for the money and effort spent. D. A Review — Include in your plan anything that worked well last year. It’s not always necessary to reinvent the wheel. If something works, keep doing it! E. New ideas — New ideas or improvements on old ideas. You’ll save time and money by knowing when and where you will advertise and how you will promote. 2. Not Knowing Who Your Audience Is and What They Think Your audience is your public, your prospects, your clients and potential clients. For most businesses, that doesn’t include everyone in the general public. If you are a swimming pool cleaner, you will get the most from your advertising budget by promoting to pool owners. You’ll get an even better response if you know what concerns pool owners have about the cleanliness of their pools. The best way to learn more about your prospects, who they are and what they think, is by survey. But if you can’t do a survey, you can learn more just by talking to current customers, looking back through past sales, evaluating trends, and studying what works for your competition. Promote directly to the concerns of prospects rather than just telling them what you offer. 3. Not Being Consistent A. Message — What is your message? Based on your plan and your knowledge of your prospect (from the work you did above), you should now know what your message is. Don’t mix it up, don’t confuse your prospects. Keep telling your message. Continue to survey and learn more about your audience and change your message only when you find out that your prospects think or want something different. B. Your Look or Identity — It doesn’t have to be award-winning design but it should be consistent. Establish your corporate image through consistent application of color and layout. Always use your company brand consistently. Do not use your logo as a headline or bury it in copy or dilute it in any way. Keep your identity a separate element that is easily distinguished and recognizable. C. Repetition — Keep promoting. If you send out a postcard in January and business doesn’t increase immediately, do not stop. The reason you see McDonald’s ads every day is because it takes that to keep business coming in. It’s better to mail an inexpensive postcard every month than to do a large, expensive, one-time ad. The ad is gone in a day and you are forgotten the next day. Instead send some information every month: new product announcements, successes or testimonials from current clients, etc. The Difference There are hundreds of ways to waste your marketing and advertising. The best way to avoid mistakes is simply to put your attention on what you’re doing and what you want to accomplish. Right now, go make a plan and get to know your audience. By Steve Hill There is much talk in the media about how more and more people are becoming obese and the negative affect this can have on our lives. The question is what is the best way to go about losing weight? There are so many different weight loss programs being advertised which makes it very hard to know which one to go for. In this article I write about what I consider is the best route to take to help people to shed their excess weight and to eventually reach their ideal target weight. I have battled with my own weight for much of my adult life. In the past I have tried methods such as crash dieting where I would basically radically reduce the amount I was eating for a number of weeks in the hope that this would work. I had limited success with this approach, at times I did lose quite a lot of the fat but it always seemed to return only a few weeks later, once I had started to eat properly again. This I have read is not exactly the most healthy of routes to take and one in which I eventually gave up on. I was then quite lucky to receive some very good advice from a friend of mine. He had also had many problems in controlling his own weight and told me about how he had managed to reach a weight he was happy with. What he had decided to do was to change his whole approach to dieting and weight loss. He had often seen it as one massive choir and effort, an effort that he never truly believed would result in a successful outcome. This he soon realised was a very negative way at looking at things which no doubt was always likely to end with a negative result. He then decided to turn full circle and to think in a far more positive way. Instead of seeing weight loss as a choir he would see it as a form of hobby. You are no doubt thinking that this is rather strange, well that was what I was thinking when he was explaining it all to me. Within his overall hobby of losing weight he would have additional hobbies. These included playing tennis, badminton and football. These were sports he had enjoyed playing when he was at college but that he had rarely played since becoming employed. He therefore decided to start to play these sports again whenever he could. His opinion was that if he could put in as much time to his new hobby of losing weight as he did for all of his other hobbies that the results should then be positive. He set himself goals of where he wanted to be, weight wise, at the end of each month for example and worked hard to attain these goals. The sports that he decided to start playing again not only helped him to lose weight but also helped to improve his social life. I decided to follow my friends lead and took a similar approach. This is probably not ideal or even suitable for reasons such as health for some people but it certainly helped me and my friend to feel a lot better about ourselves and our weight. Can a Marital Separation Ever Save a Marriage?

By Nancy Wasson As an experienced counselor, one of the questions Im asked frequently is, Can a marital separation ever save a marriage? My answer is a qualified yes. Sometimes a couple is miserable living together and cant seem to co-exist without having constant harping and bickering. If they have children, they may worry about the impact on them of all the fighting. Each spouse wants the marriage to work and is willing to work on the problems and issues in marriage counseling while theyre separated. Couples in this situation often plan to use the separation period to let the dust settle, reflect on the marriage, take responsibility for their share of what has happened, and work on individual and joint issues in counseling. One goal is for the spouses to use their problem-solving skills in counseling to address and resolve the most serious problems before moving back together. Both spouses agree not to date anyone else and to focus exclusively on working to improve the marriage. For these couples, the separation can be a time to think, to reflect, to analyze, to cool off and calm down, and to take a break from each other. It also provides time and space for each spouse to make unhurried, thoughtful decisions instead of waiting for things to blow up and then impulsively leaving. Used in this way, a planned separation can actually help to save a marriage. In other cases, one spouse or the other may move out on the spur of the moment after an upsetting argument. The separation is unplanned, and there are no plans for marriage counseling, no guidelines agreed upon about seeing others, and no tentative time-line for the separation. There is usually much anxiety on the part of the partner who has been left unexpectedly and there are many unanswered questions: What is happening? Will the partner file for divorce? Will the marriage survive? Whether the separation will help or hurt the marriage is unknown in this case. Things could go either way, depending on what happens. Another situation that can result in separation is when a spouse is living in an intolerable situation in the marriage. Perhaps the partner is verbally abusive, chronically runs around, or shows continual disrespect towards his or her spouse in some other way. The spouse may have tried to get the partner to go to counseling, but the partner always refused. Sometimes the best thing the spouse can do is to decide to separate and hope that the partner will be shocked enough by the unexpected action to finally agree to work on the marriage. In situations like this, a separation can sometimes save the marriage. The partner often says, I knew we had some problems, but I didnt think they were that serious. I never thought she (or he) would really leave. She kept telling me, but I didnt believe her. The spouse then has to stand firm and let the partner know that she is going to live separately because I refuse to be in a marriage where Im treated like this. I deserve more. By not rushing to file for divorce, the spouse finds out during the planned separation if the partner is finally motivated enough to enter counseling and work on changing. If the couple enters counseling, the therapist will then be able to give them a recommendation about when they are ready to live together again, if ever. Of course, there are no guarantees in a marital separation. The separation might be instrumental in saving the marriage, or it may widen the gap between the two spouses and eventually lead to divorce. A planned separation is always preferable to an impulsive one. The following five tips can help you if you need to think about separating from your spouse: 1. Talk with your spouse about what your individual goals are for the separation. Are they the same or different? 2. Try to reach agreement that neither of you will date anyone else during this period of time. If your marriage is going to have the best chance possible, youll want to agree not to have sexual entanglements with others so you can continue to work on your relationship. 3. Set a tentative time period for the separation, such as three months. At the end of that time, you can both re-evaluate the decision in terms of whats best for each of you. 4. Agree to seek individual and joint counseling during the separation to address the key problems and issues that have caused conflict in the marriage. This is an ideal time to do some deep individual work on your own personal issues as well as to address core relationship issues. 5. Set guidelines that you both agree to about how much contact youll have during the separation and what kind of contact it will be. It doesnt do any good to have a separation if one spouse or the other is calling on the phone every five minutes and constantly wanting to talk more about the problems. The separation is supposed to reduce conflict and give each person some space and relief from constant pressure and arguments. Nancy J. By Liz Sumner This is for everyone who is sticking with a job that no longer fits. Maybe it was right for awhile, for a certain time and place in your life. But not anymore. When was the last time you jumped out of bed with excitement about what the day would bring? “But I love the people I work with.” “It’s so convenient.” “The money’s pretty decent, considering” I’ve heard all the excuses. Hell, I’ve made them. You know that job is sucking your soul and it’s time to leave. The only thing left to decide is how. Above all, you want it to be your decision. Don’t let boredom and apathy lead to an attitude that gets you fired or passed over. Who wants to work with a burnout no matter how skilled they are? The number one reason people stay in bad jobs is fear of the unknown. Are you hanging on to something that doesn’t fit just because it’s familiar? What if the unknown wasn’t scary? What if it was filled with joy and delightful possibilities? Sure, there’s that transition period where you leave what you can do in your sleep and head into new territory. I assure you that the downhill slide of staying too long is far greater than the steepness of a little learning curve. How might you make unknown territory more comfortable? 1. Make It Known Learn about it. Do research. Talk to people. Do informational interviews. Volunteer, be a trainee. Find ways to educate yourself. Go to school. Hire a trainer. Shine some light on the stuff the scary ignorance and it’s no big deal. If you’re drawn to it you probably have a knack. 2. Make It Up There are a lot of successful people in the world who just decide that they know what they’re doing. I’ll never forget my friend Susan, a beautiful and confident woman who discovered her gift for public speaking in Toastmaster’s and went on to become a highly paid consultant just because she decided she was worth listening to. I had just finished grad school and was trying to get my nerve up to go pitch companies. She read a book or two, made a presentation, and was suddenly crossing the country getting big fees. There’s a lot to be said for chutzpah. 3. Try It On A Small Scale Part-time or pilot projects work well particularly if you’re thinking of venturing out on your own. The hours are long when you don’t give up your day job but if you’re pursuing your passion you generally can find the energy. Cater a friend’s party for the cost of the supplies. Print some business cards on your computer. Do some pro bono work for a civic group for the testimonials. Before long you’ll feel ready to go for it. 4. Dive In This is my favorite. I get enormous energy from leaping off metaphorical cliffs. Instead of screaming “NO”, try saying “Wheee!” or “Geronimo.” I’ve crossed the country on three occasions with no job and no place to live. I keep having soft, successful landings so I keep leaping. Sometimes it takes a geographic change to get yourself out of a rut. Try something out there and see if you can fly. 5. Be Prepared So maybe you’re not a leaper. You can plan for contingencies, save that nest egg. Find an answer for all the what-ifs. But be careful not to over prepare. Just how likely are those eventualities that you’re covering? There comes a point when it’s time to take steps. “Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favour all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Getting a grain that is this fine is really important when it comes to certain kinds of coffee, such as a Turkish coffee. Some of these allow you to adjust your granule size to a very fine degree. The best burrs will offer a low noise level and will be easy to clean. A brush to clean your burr is important and being able to remove the upper burrs is also critical.
