The Emotional Aspects of Test Taking

Monday, April 28th, 2008

By Milton Drepaul One aspect of test taking is the emotional/psychological dimension. My advice to those who develop high anxiety about test situations is to try all or some of the following. If you suspect that this is a really deep fear(your heart races, you sweat, your mouth becomes dry)I recommend you try EFT. Emotional Freedom Techniques is a really simple technique that quickly frees you from fears and doubts in the vast majority of cases. You can learn it in minutes and positive results are immediate.Download a free manual from www.emofree.com Use visualization to see yourself successfully completing the test smoothly and comfortably. Write down a short description of what happens on your day of the test.In your description identify the points that cause you fear and write down a successful out come. (e.g. I get up early,I’m confident, I eat my favorite breakfast, I arrive on time, I am focused, I choose the correct answers easily, I finish in good time, I leave the center feeling that I comfortably accomplished optimal performance). Preparation includes knowing exactly what is required of you in the test situation. You must not put extra pressure on yourself by not having the correct information about test date, time and place. Make sure that you give yourself enough time to get to the building and room in good time. Also be quite clear as to the nature of the test. What type is it? Is it multiple choice? What of the many variations of multiple choice is it? Is it essay type or short answer? How long will the test be? How many items are in the test? What decisions have to be made during the test? What content areas are being tested and for what purpose? In other word try to place yourself in the shoes of the person setting the test. What does this person expect the test taker to accomplish in the test. I also underscore the writing of notes. The kinetic energy involved in writing things down helps to imprint it in your brain. Beware of what you say to others about your intended performance. It’s a waste of energy to send out into the ethers negative predictions about what you will do. (e.g. I’m bound to fail. I always do badly on…,This is not my best area etc). If you find it difficult to envisage a positive outcome it makes it worse to enlist others to join you in a negative prediction.Even if you think it,don’t say it aloud. Resume Writing Tips & Ideas

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

By Joshua Nay Make sure that your resume is up to date with your latest job experience and educational accomplishments. Have a friend or relative evaluate your resume to see if it is clear, consistent, and fairly represents your skills and experience. Is your resume in a high impact format? Be sure to do a spell check on your resume. Misspelled works can reflect negatively on you and diminish your prospects. Many companies have a form on their web sites for submitting electronic resumes. Have a version of your resume that you can cut and paste into submittal forms. Create one that doesn’t have columns and indents as these do not work well when pasted into a form. Let your family, friends, alumni groups, and industry contacts know you are looking for a job. Send them your resume. Many jobs are unadvertised and these people may know of potential openings. Also many employers would rather hire someone suggested to them by a person they trust. Summit your resume electronically to companies rather than via paper if possible. Check out their web sites to see if they have a resume submittal form. Submit it through the form, if not send them an electronic version in Word or as a text file. Many large companies put electronic resumes into a database which then can be searched by managers looking to hire additional people. Using the database managers can do keyword searches to quickly find candidates. Most managers do not want to take the time to wade through hundreds of paper resumes looking for candidates. Most paper resumes never even get looked at in some of these large companies. A local large airplane manufacturer and a local large software company rely heavily on their resume database for new candidates. Post your resume to resume databases. Generally the posting is free. This is a lot more cost effective then spending hundreds of dollars in printing and postage costs blindly sending out resumes to companies. Recruiters search these databases looking for candidates to fill positions.. A potentially even more effective approach is to use a resume distribution service. For a small price you can blast your resume out to 1000’s of recruiters. This can be more effective than waiting for a recruiter to stumble across your resume in a database. It also only costs a fraction of the amount it would for printing and postage to do a mass mailing of your resume. Most of these services give you some control over what industries and geographic regions your resume is sent to. Many jobs are unadvertised as employers don’t want to be bombarded by thousands of resumes. Therefore it is important for you to get your resume in the hands of your contacts. Also get your resume into the databases that potential employers can search. Look in the job databases for potential openings. You can search through thousands of potential jobs using field and location selection criteria.. Many local employers post job openings in this database because the state does not charge a fee for the service. If you are in college or have graduated from a local college check out their career services department. Many have web sites with links to recruiters, upcoming recruiter visits, job postings, and much more. Most major and even local newspapers have online editions with help wanted sections. These can be superior to paper editions because you can often do keyword searches allowing you to zero in on potential jobs. This is much more efficient than reading hundreds of job ads in paper editions. Landing that first job can be hard. Many employers look for “experienced” candidates. If you have had internships be sure to emphasize them in your resume. If you have assisted a professor in research or teaching emphasize that in your resume. Many of your smaller companies feel they don’t have the time or resources to train you. They need someone that can be productive now! Generally your larger companies have resources and internal training programs to get inexperienced employees up to speed. Your may have a better chance getting on with a larger company. Your first job may not be your “dream” job. Look for one that can give you experience and make you attractive to an employer a few years down the road. Large companies are often a great place to start because they tend to be the most willing to hire and train new graduates. Unfortunately they are often not the best place to have a career. Many large companies are stagnant or grow slowly. Promotions and career growth is often slow and you have to wait for someone ahead of you to retire. If you go to work for a large company do it for a few years to get some practical experience to add to your resume. If your career has not advanced significantly after a few years look for new opportunities. It is often easy to get stuck at a large company because they offer stability, decent salary, and good benefits. Once you have some experience look for a young fast growing company to join. Often you can ride their success upwards to a much higher position and salary compared to staying with an older slow growth company. Look at what happened to the people that joined Microsoft early on. If you have visions of having your own business some day find out who is the best company in your industry. Go to work for them and learn what they have done to be successful. Also look for how you could do things better than they do. Then after a few years take the plunge and start your own company. Tips for Buying a Vintage Watch Through Cyber Dealerships and On-Line Auctions

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

By Desmond Guilfoyle The Internet appears to have had three major effects on the vintage watch market: firstly, in terms of supply; secondly, in relation to price, and thirdly, it has given parasites and con artists a global platform in which to practise their deceit. SUPPLY In pre-internet days, the collectors lot was that of a somewhat nomadic search for elusive timepieces, of countless visits to auction houses and dealerships, of infrequent but heartening finds and of time lines extending to many years, or even lifetimes, to build up substantial collections. These days the legwork has to a large degree been replaced with an ever-changing marketplace of thousands of watches on Ebay alone. The collectors experience and understanding of supply has been turned upside-down and watches hitherto thought of as rare or hard to find turn up regularly on various Internet auction sites. It is now possible to assemble large collections in shorter periods of time if your passion is aflame and your coffers are deep. While this may satisfy in the short term the irrepressible obsessions and impulses of avid collectors, I wonder whether it will also gratify prematurely the collectors appetite for a lifetime of interest and acquisition. PRICE The Internet has also had a significant impact on price. No longer can a few bricks and mortar vintage watches dealers monopolise price structures and quarantine specialist knowledge. The downside of this is that fewer people strike up a relationship with their dealer or watchmaker and instead fly solo on the Internet. However, if newbies land in one of the more respected brand or vintage forums, they will encounter many generous people willing to share their knowledge. While the on-line auction scene and specialist trading pages of watch forums started off as a platform for connecting wholesalers to retailers, it has matured into marketplace where collectors source vintage watches from a pool of suppliers, becoming almost, but not completely, a retail market. Prices are, to a larger extent, determined globally these days. BLOODSUCKERS GO GLOBAL The growth of the Internet vintage watch marketplace through on-line auctions and cyber-dealerships has also created a new group of consumers for vintage timepieces. And wherever there are neophytes with money, the slimy underbelly of commerce soon reveals itself. In on-line watch forums the dissent over shady and dishonest seller practices has risen in concert with a creeping fatalism expressed by seasoned contributors who lament that the villains and shonks of the horological universe will ultimately push the good guys out. Another common theme to run through many threads in on-line forums is Caveat Emptor. This is often accompanied with somewhat merciless sentiments like its tough titties and maybe a useful and salutary experience for newbies to buy a lemon or get ripped off. At least they walk away with a bit more experience - so goes the logic. Too much emphasis, however, on Caveat Emptor and too little emphasis on blaming, naming and shaming the bloodsuckers who feed off the naivet of new and often enthusiastic bidders sends the wrong message. When we place a disproportionate onus on buyers, the message we send to the parasites and rip-off merchants is that buyer naivety is a type of crime in itself. In the crooked mind of your average Internet parasite, that may mitigate his or her deceitful and underhanded practices. Blaming the innocent makes it morally easier for the shonks to go into denial and avoid facing the full import of their deeds. It allows them to escape introspection and get out of facing the fact that theyre navel lint, that they hurt people, and that theyre a blight on the horological landscape. If youre new to the game and want to avoid becoming a victim of the swarm of internet parasites that are buzzing around looking for fresh blood, observe the following cautions: THE NEOPHYTES LIST OF ON-LINE VINTAGE WATCH AUCTION DOS AND DONTS Hazy unfocussed pictures can hide a multitude of sins only bid or buy from sellers who agree to provide you with quality close-ups. Match those close-ups with what you know are pictures of the genuine article. Never buy a watch from someone who cant or wont provide you with close-ups of the movement, caseback and dial. Before you bid, check serial, caliber and caseback numbers to ensure they match to satisfy yourself that you are bidding on an authentic watch. Never buy a watch from someone who cant or wont provide relevant serial numbers and caseback numbers. If you havent got numbers how can you do an authenticity check? Ask for the service history of the watch. Unless the seller or dealer expressly says the watch has been serviced, assume that you will have to service the watch as soon as you receive it. Factor that into your bid. If you want a vintage watch to look and perform as new, youre in the wrong market. If a vintage watch does look brand shiny new, chances are its been seriously re-furbished. Ask the seller to detail exactly what was done. If its not to specifications its value will be seriously compromised. Never buy a watch that has been offered under a twenty-four hour listing. This is a favourite ploy of scam artists who purloin genuine pics and set up bogus listings. Never buy a vintage watch from a Chinese seller who has minimal or no feedback. More fraudulent listings come out of China, than Indonesia, Malaysia and other Asian countries combined. Unless you really know what youre doing, avoid sellers who have little experience in vintage watches. Bid from sellers who have excellent feedback and a strong history of selling watches. With vintage watches, be very wary of descriptions like: mint, minty, new-old-stock, brand new-in-box, keeps perfect time, like new, never worn, etc. Instead, go with sellers who detail in their listings specific condition reports and who use clear language to describe the watch. Look for ambiguity in listings. If the description can be taken more than one way, assume that the most negative connotation is correct. Ask plenty of questions of the seller. Clarify any issues before you bid. Good sellers welcome questions and respond fully to queries. Shonks avoid being tied down and will often be cagey in their replies.Avoid sellers who have ‘private’ feedback or who have opted for private bidding. While some sellers do this to avoid fraudulent second chance offers being sent to unsuccessful bidders, it is also conducive to sellers organising what is termed shill bidding: registering another name on on-line auctions and bidding against genuine bidders to inflate the price of the watch. Take Command of Your Career: How To Avoid Relying On Other People

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

By Carl Mueller Take command of your career and dont rely on others to manage it for you. The Internet has made it very easy for job searchers to rely on other people to manage their careers, usually with limited results. Here are some suggestions to ensure you take command of your career: 1. Dont rely on other people to run your job search for you. A recruiter doesnt work for you, they work for any client company that pays them to find staff. A recruiter isnt paid to get you a job, they are paid to find someone to take a job that their client has available. Similarly, while its good to get advice from trusted friends and family regarding your career, its your career not theirs so the ultimate responsibility lies with you. 2. Dont rely on resume-blasting services. You may have heard of companies that you can hire to mass email thousands of hiring managers and recruiters with your resume. I wouldn’t expect great results from this sort of service. If your resume is getting emailed along with hundreds of other resumes, it’s likely to get lost in the shuffle or blocked by a spam filter. I remember signing up (as a recruiter) to receive resumes from one of these services just to try it out. I did not find this service useful and usually deleted the emails without looking at them. Protect your resume and treat it like something that has value. Its hard to take command of your career when you put it in the hands of thousands of people you havent met who dont know you either. Manage your resume’s distribution and using this sort of service likely isnt something that is worth your time. Take command of your career, don’t put it in the hands of strangers. 3. Dont apply for jobs you arent qualified for. Some people think they should apply for jobs they are over qualified or under qualified for, hoping that it will lead to another more suitable job in the company being presented to them. Applying for jobs you arent qualified for is a waste of your time and the hiring managers and chances are they will just think of you as someone who is desperate and who cant follow instructions. You may end up being blackballed from a company and ruining your chances at a future job with them that you are qualified for. Take command of your career by understanding what positions you should and shouldn’t apply for. 4. Dont start looking to find your dream career until you know what you are looking for. Dont choose your career goals based on what other people tell you is hot or what they think youd be good at. You also shouldnt choose your career path based on what you think will make you the most money. At the end of the day, you know yourself better than anyone else and you know what will make you happy. Take command of your career by first understanding what you are looking for. Frequency Pollution; Is it real?

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Lance_Winslow]Lance Winslow Today we are finding since the beginning of radio and Teslas work in alternating current that these increased man made waves do affect the brain. The Wireless revolution is upon us and those of us who are sensitive to frequencies bands will find it difficult to have quality of life in those areas where lots of wireless activity is. A study by three Dutch government ministries found that radio signals for the next generation of mobile phone services can cause headaches and nausea. We have already found this out, there may be a way that this can be accounted for and corrected by use of intermittent ELF to help the body super charge the immune system. In this particular Dutch Government Funded Wireless Study they compared the effects of radiation from base stations used for the current mobile telephone network with the radiation effects of base stations of 3G networks. The study found that the test group exposed to third generation base station signals felt tingling sensations, got headaches, and felt nauseous. Cognitive functions such as memory and response times were actually boosted by both 3G signals and the current signals. This is interesting and I have found this to be true when I used lots of minutes on my cell phone, I had more brain activity. Other studies have recently come out and said that small does of microwave are actually good for you and I have found that significant doses of caffeine during periods of high cell phone use increased and stimulated brain activity to higher levels of thinking. Similar to a computer running at a higher frequency. The ramifications of the study to Wi-Fi networks is clear: previous research into the health effects of radio frequency radiation always measured the impact of cell phones, which are held close to the head and cause high fields of radiation close to the ear and warming of the brain. I have found that it heated up the back of the brain or cerebellum and thus stimulated the brain, but also could cause headaches, until which time the brain got use to that frequency; then it enjoyed the stimuli and was even able to pick up that signal. Meaning, just seconds before the phone rang the brain felt stimulated, in other words the brain was in fact picking up the signal. This even worked when the phone was in the next room. So these studies are correct and the 3D technology and the cognitive enhancement, I can vouch for is real. The Dutch study, on the other hand, used lower a dose of radiation to mimic base station signals rather than handsets. Handsets emit stronger radiation when they are used, while base stations transmit more constant levels of radio signals, exposing everyone within range. This is just a thought. And here are some other recent article on the subject. http://www.reuters.com/printerFriendlyPopu…storyID=3534786 http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,4149,1276183,00.asp . All frequency pollution will have an effect on the brain, since it also works at a certain frequency as do all parts of the body. The important thing is to understand how these frequencies in the new wireless age affect the biorhythms and then move forward with a plan to protect the body and even enhance its performance without causing cancer, free radicals or damage to the tissue. Think about it. “Lance Winslow” - Online [http://www.WorldThinkTank.net/wttbbs/]Think Tank forum board. Heaven is Going to Be a Shock to You

Monday, April 14th, 2008

By Gary Kurz You are a born again believer. You have placed your faith in Christ and know your eternity is secure. You enjoy this life, but inside, like most believers, you yearn for that moment when your soul will take flight for that heavenly shore. Most of us do not want our earthly life to hurry by, yet our souls thirst for the time when we shall bid the cares of this woeful world and our toils goodbye. You have heard so much about heaven from preachers and your Sunday School Teacher. It is a grand place where all the cares and problems of this life are left far behind, where your dreams and hopes are fulfilled. Many promises are made in scripture concerning this wonderful place and every one of them is positive and uplifting. But what if heaven isn’t what you expected? What if when you get there, you find that everything you imagined is not so? The truth is, most Christians are in for a very big surprise, perhaps even a shock. Heaven will not be at all what they expected. If you ask the average person what heaven is like, invariably they will respond with “it is a place of happiness”, or words to that effect. Then, if queried further, they will elaborate on what they think it will take to make heaven a happy place for them. One will imagine that they will be playing marathon golf, sporting an unearthly handicap. Another envisions endless championship fishing tournaments with them as the star. Still others imagine unlimited charge accounts at enormous malls that never run out of stock and never close. It is human nature to create our own personal utopia in our minds. It is how we visualize and categorize our hopes. But human nature is exactly that part of us that God does not want in his heaven. Human nature is in contrast with God. It is referred to in scripture by many other names and all are seated in negative context. It is referred to as self, the flesh, the old man, and the old nature just to name a few. Our old nature is our sinful part, the selfish, self-centered and self-serving part. It is shown as the cause of our sin and problems. The sum of it is told to us in Romans where it is called “enmity (or hatred) against God”. In other words, the only thing our flesh is capable of is hatred toward God. It is this human or earthly nature that imagines a customized heaven. It is our self-centeredness that dictates what it would take for heaven to be our personal utopia. Herein then is the surprise for many believers; that heaven will not be at all what they are expecting, but will be rather what God wants it to be. So then, what is heaven like? What does God have planned? The short and simple answer is “I don’t know”. We are not given much detail on God’s plans for eternity, except that we will spend much time around his throne fellowshipping with him. Indeed, if we could quantify the heavenly experience in terms of time, most of our time will be spent worshipping and praising the Lord. Now, at the risk of shocking you further, let me say that I find the prospect of constant worship quite boring. I do not mean to be irreverent to the Lord, for certainly he is deserving of my eternal praise, but somehow golf and fishing seem to resonate with my excitement sensor more than a perpetual church service. If worshipping 24/7 was something that thrilled me, why do I have so much trouble being faithful to church on Sundays when I get the sniffles? But that is just “me” talking, or my old nature. The best my old man can imagine for heaven is to concede to God cursory time of praise and worship. The rest of the time, my old nature wants for myself. In my present condition, though regenerated and indwelt by the Holy Spirit, my old flesh still has a modicum of control and influence in my thinking. Consequently, I often think in terms of what “I” want and what will make “me” happy. Fortunately, that is not how I will enter heaven. In I Corinthians 15:53 we are told “For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality” (kjv). Right now, I am corruptible, because of my flesh. But when this mortal shall put on immortality, I will also put on incorruption. In reality, incorruption is not so much put on as corruption is put off. Either way, I will be without my old nature. When we accept the Lord, essentially our salvation comes in three phases. First, immediately upon confessing Christ, we are saved from the penalty of sin. Our sins are forgiven forever. There is no longer a penalty. The wages of sin were paid by the Lord Jesus and our account is paid in full. Then, as we live our Christian experience on earth, we are saved from the power of sin. We are told that sin no longer has dominion (or control) over us. This is a quantitative term that means influence still is present, but not control. We have the Holy Spirit within us teaching, convicting and growing his fruit or attributes within us. Finally, when we pass or when the rapture occurs, we are saved from the presence of sin. This is huge. Sin is no longer a part of us. The old man, the flesh, the old nature is supernaturally extracted by God and put off. No longer is self important. No longer do we think in terms of “me” and “I”. In this new state where self is no longer the center of our world, where sin has no presence, then our new man will soar and excel. Then worshipping God and praising his mighty works will be thrilling and exciting. We will hardly be able to contain the praise that pours from our lips as we fellowship with the one with whom we have to do. Golf and fishing will not even register on our “to do” list as all we will want to do is sit in the presence of our Lord, overwhelmed with his majesty and wonder. Yes, heaven will be a surprise for many, but it will be a pleasant surprise when we arrive there without our old nature. It will be a time unparalleled in our previous existence, where we no longer are influenced by the selfish flesh that housed our soul for so long. Wedding Cake Design Through History

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

By David Chandler The design of the traditional wedding cake has varied greatly over time. Once a sign of fertility, the wedding cake of the Roman Empire was made of wheat or Barley. The small cake was then broken over the bride’s head, celebrating her fertility. The design of the wedding cake changed and it became a tradition to pile several small cakes on top of each other. The bride and groom then tried kiss over the top of the cakes without knocking them down. A successful kiss was a good omen, bringing a lifetime of prosperity to the new couple. The current traditional design of wedding cakes first appeared in the 1660’s. A French Chef visiting London attended a cake piling ceremony. He was shocked at the way the cakes were stacked on top of each other, and how often they fell over, so he created the tiered iced style of wedding cake we know today. The wedding cake is more than just a desert at your reception. It is a symbol of good fortune and married bliss. Your guests always enjoy admiring the wedding cake and devouring the cake too. Even on a limited budget, you can present a beautiful wedding cake. Low cost options could include buying a stacked cake from your local bakery and dressing it up yourself. Ordering a cake from a pastry class at a culinary school could also be an option. There are also supermarkets and wholesale clubs that may offer bargain priced customized cakes. Make a Splash with a Mermaid Fairytale Wedding

Monday, April 7th, 2008

By Jeanette Shinn For a variation on the typical beach themed wedding combine it with a fairytale wedding theme to create a mermaid fairytale wedding. Such a celebration can be an unforgettably beautiful wedding experience that you and your guests will talk about for many years. The mermaid fairytale wedding lends itself wonderfully to an elegant wedding celebration of love and romance. Start with Your Wedding Dress Yes, building your mermaid fairytale wedding theme begins with your wedding dress. Most wedding dresses whose designs are inspired by mermaid fairytales are elegant sheaths that flair somewhere around the knees into a gorgeous train. By choosing such a wedding dress you begin to lay the foundation for a tasteful salute to the mermaid theme in your wedding. Look at Your Feet You, after all, have to play the role of the mermaid. So, at least for the reception you want something that will add beauty and a touch of the sea to your feet. The best way I know to do that is with a pair of barefoot sandals that will adorn your feet with puka shells, pearls, or any number of other crystals. As a matter of fact, you can get entire ensembles that will lend to your overall look as a beauty from the sea with everything from hand wraps, to necklaces, to hair jewelry and beyond. Consider the Overall Decor Unless you have a huge budget you are probably not going to be able to pull off a mermaid themed wedding in a high school gymnasium (why would you want to?). Instead, look for a location that you can quickly and easily adapt to your theme. Of course, a beach wedding is a natural but if that’s not an option an indoor wedding that maintains the theme is achievable. Begin with fish tanks. Hold your wedding reception in a restaurant with large fish tanks, or rent part of a local aquatic park. Or simply rent several fish tanks (fish included) to be set up in a hotel ballroom or tasteful church multipurpose room and let as much of your lighting be filtered by the water as possible. Done well a mermaid fairytale wedding is just as incredible as your dreams. Have Fun with the Music Be creative with the music you choose to set the tone for your mermaid fairytale wedding. There are multitudes of ways you can go. Is this a royal mermaid fantasy? Then you will probably want more regal, courtly sounding music. Are you thinking more along the lines of a beach love story between a man and the mermaid who rescues him (or the other way round)? Then perhaps music more suited to a Hollywood beach romance blockbuster would be better. Of course, you could always pay homage to the classic Disney movie, “The Little Mermaid” by using the song, “Under the Sea” to kick off the dance. If you dare, make your entrance in your mermaid fairytale wedding to the song that Ariel sings when she first gets her voice back after Ursula is defeated to symbolically represent all that you have overcome to get to your fairytale wedding day. Whatever you choose, the point is that you choose your music deliberately to fit your specific vision of the theme. Just about the only thing that won’t work is using the old standard wedding songs the way they’ve always been used - not because they’re bad, but because without a lot of alteration they won’t present the mermaid fantasy image that you are trying to portray. Finally, Consider the Details Use sandcastles as a centerpiece on your head table and sandcastle votive table decor to provide ambiance. Likewise, a hand blown glass mermaid couple cake top on your seascape themed wedding cake. Furthermore, choose a beach wedding favor such as sea shell gel candles or a crab wine bottle holder on your reception tables to compliment the decor and to send your guests home with something that will remind them of your mermaid fairytale wedding for many years to come.
